The Advantages and Disadvantages of Corian Kitchen Worktops
If you're yearning for a beautifully designed kitchen worktop, Corian is the natural choice.
Corian is one of the most popular types of work surface around and with good reason, it's unique properties mean that it can be moulded, cut, shaped and formed to the most exquisite designs and shapes, taking pride of place in any home. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to Corian worktops.
If you're considering Corian for your next kitchen renovation project then you likely want to know the pros and cons to the surface so you can make an educated decision before you buy. That's what I'm here for and I just want to highlight both the advantages and disadvantages to corian kitchen worktops so you can decide if it's right for you.
The Advantages
Corian is an acrylic material that is solid throughout and is available in over 70 different colours. Whatever colour or style you have in mind for your kitchen, you will have no trouble getting your dream worktop with Corian. Corian Solid Surfaces will give you a seamless worktop with inconspicuous or invisible joints.
Corian is a strong, durable, non-porous work surface and extremely easy to clean while also being highly resistant to stains. However, I'd advise you clean all stains and spills as soon as they occur. You can maintain your Corian with regular washing with clean, hot soapy water. For stubborn stuck on material I'd recommend a special worktop cleaner Cif or Barkeepers Friend and use a White Scotch-Brite pad. For sinks made out of Corian, periodical overnight soaking in warm water and a cup full of bleach is advised.
The huge library of Corian colours available to you mean that you are guaranteed to find what you're looking for and it's considerably less expensive to buy than the some natural stones.
So in addition to a huge variety of colours and styles giving you an endless choice, there is also a hygiene advantage to Corian. Both your Corian Work Surfaces and sinks can be provided as one full kitchen unit. The seamless joints virtually eliminate any chance of bacteria build up between the work surface and the sink.
The Disadvantages
The main disadvantage of using Corian as a work surface is that that it isn't cheap. However being a very high quality material and coming from Du Pont, a reputable manufacturer, you truly do get what you pay for. For some cost may be an issue but if you make the investment you are sure you get a durable, beautiful looking kitchen worktop that will give you much enjoyment for years to come.
I'd also advise never to use Corian as a cutting surface as with any high quality material, it will scratch over time so always use a chopping board and you should have little to no problems at all with Corian.
If the worst does happen and you do mark your Corian work surface it can be repaired, unlike most other man made work surface materials. To make sure the repair is done correctly it's important that you use a Du Pont Quality Network approved supplier.
