If they make a purchase, after reaching the website via your link, you will be paid a commission on that sale. Affiliate marketing on the Internet may not even require a direct sale. Some programs offer a small commission even if the customer clicks through to the website. Or you are paid for each customer that registers to your merchant's site. This will create a list for the merchant to try for future sales.
All of this is what affiliate marketing is. You can even sponsor products, sell them for a merchant and make money. Posting ads online, writing articles pertaining to the product with links, or by promoting links on your website, these are all avenues of this type of marketing on the internet.
